Flevoland is the largest artificial polder in the world and lies literally on the bottom of the former Zuiderzee. This results in a unique combination of sleek, modern architecture, vast nature, and impressive land art. Wherever you are, you are standing on land that was deep underwater until the mid-20th century. You can taste that history everywhere: from the hyper-modern cities of Almere and Lelystad to the reclaimed former islands of Urk and Schokland, which are now surrounded by greenery instead of waves.
The absolute crown jewel of Flevoland's nature is the Oostvaardersplassen, a wetland of international stature where red deer, Konik horses, and Heck cattle roam free, and where the white-tailed eagle breeds. You can explore this area beautifully starting from the visitor center in Lelystad.

Both Schokland and Urk used to be islands in the turbulent Zuiderzee.
In 1995, Schokland became the very first UNESCO World Heritage site in the Netherlands due to its unique combination of archaeological treasures and the battle against the water. You can enjoy beautiful walks past the old village mounds and visit the local museum.

Absolutely, Flevoland is surrounded by water (the IJsselmeer, Markermeer, and the Randmeren) and therefore boasts miles of beaches. In particular, the beaches along the Randmeren (such as near Zeewolde and Almere) and the Almeerderstrand are incredibly popular for sunbathing, swimming, kitesurfing, and sailing. The marinas are modernly equipped, and the water is generally calmer than the open sea, making it ideal for families with children and beginner water sports enthusiasts.
Flevoland is easily accessible both by car (via the A6 and A27) and by train towards Almere and Lelystad. Once in the province, the bicycle is the ultimate mode of transport. Thanks to the flat landscape and the miles of straight-as-an-arrow cycling paths that run straight through the forests and along the dikes, you can go on fantastic cycling trips here.
There are also special driving routes that lead you past the immense Land Art masterpieces scattered throughout the polder, such as The Green Cathedral or Exposure (the crouching man in Lelystad).
